Guwahati, July 14, 2023: An investigation has been initiated into allegations of extortion involving two police officers from Satgaon police station in Guwahati. The Officer In-Charge (OC) of Satgaon PS, Sandip Kumar Kanu, and Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI), Alakesh Baruah, were summoned to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office on Friday morning to provide clarification regarding the accusations leveled against them.

The investigation centers around claims that the two officers attempted to extort money from an individual whose motorcycle had been stolen. It is alleged that they demanded a sum of Rs 5000 from the victim in exchange for assisting in the recovery of the stolen bike. However, when the individual refused to comply with their demands, the police officers reportedly refused to register a First Information Report (FIR) concerning the incident.

Subsequently, the victim sought intervention from higher authorities and lodged a complaint against the implicated police officials. This prompted an official inquiry into the matter to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and determine appropriate action.

The authorities are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent investigation process to uncover the truth and uphold the principles of justice. Any misconduct or wrongdoing found during the inquiry will be dealt with accordingly, in accordance with the law.

Such incidents of alleged extortion and abuse of power by law enforcement personnel are taken seriously, as they undermine public trust and tarnish the image of the police force. The investigation aims to address these allegations promptly and take appropriate measures to maintain the integrity of the police department while preserving public confidence in the justice system.
