Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced a significant victory in the state’s War on Drugs campaign, as security forces and forest officials successfully destroyed a 90-acre poppy plantation in Ukhrul district. The operation took place in the Phalee hill range, within the Lungchong Maiphei police station area, on Thursday.
Combined forces from the Ukhrul district police, 6 MR, 18 AR, and the Forest Department worked together to destroy the poppy plantation and burn down 12 huts. An FIR has been registered to facilitate further investigation. Chief Minister Singh commended the combined forces for their swift and coordinated efforts.
This achievement is part of Manipur’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal poppy cultivation. According to reports, over 110 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed in the state’s Khamasom hill ranges in December. Additionally, authorities have destroyed 19,135.60 acres of illegal poppy cultivation across 12 districts between 2017 and 2024.
