Shillong, Apr 21: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has assured the public that the proposed railway project will not lead to an uncontrolled influx of outsiders into the state.

Tynsong’s remarks come in response to ongoing concerns from local pressure groups and residents about potential demographic changes. He clarified that while the state requires railways, it does not automatically mean an influx of non-indigenous people. “We need railways, but it doesn’t mean outsiders will automatically settle here. If that were the case, I would also oppose it,” he stated on Saturday.

The Deputy Chief Minister further emphasized the need for transparent discussions with all stakeholders to address public anxiety. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to respecting the wishes of the people, adding, “We have always stood by the people’s wishes. On this issue too, no decision will be imposed.”

The introduction of railways in Meghalaya has faced strong opposition from groups such as the KSU and FKJGP, who fear that the project could dilute the state’s tribal-majority identity by increasing the number of non-indigenous settlers.
