Agartala, May 10, 2025: A pall of grief has descended over the West Charkbai area of Baikhora under South Tripura district following the mysterious death of an elderly woman in a fire late Friday night. The victim identified as 83-year-old Renubala Kuri died tragically after being engulfed in flames inside her home.
According to police sources, Renubala Kuri reportedly set fire to a pile of abandoned items inside her house under the Baikhora police station. However, circumstances took a horrifying turn when the flames spread to her own clothing.
“At the time of the incident, only her ailing husband, Makhan Kuri, was present in the house. The other family members were away, and due to his health condition, her husband was unable to help her,” a police official said.
Eyewitnesses and neighbors expressed deep shock and sorrow. “We heard about the fire only after it was too late. It’s heartbreaking that she died in such a painful way,” said a local resident.
Police rushed to the scene upon receiving the information and recovered the body. It was taken to Baikhora Primary Health Center for autopsy. The remains were later handed over to the family on Saturday.
“The death is being treated as unnatural, and an investigation is underway,” a police official confirmed.
The tragic incident has left the entire locality in mourning. “She was a kind and gentle woman. The way she died is beyond imagination,” a neighbor said tearfully.
