Agartala, May 13, 2025: Tripura has recorded significant improvements in the registration of births and deaths during 2021, according to the Civil Registration System (CRS) Report 2021 published by the Office of the Registrar General, India. The report presents a comprehensive overview of the state’s performance in registering vital events, reflecting progress in demographic documentation and public awareness.

The state registered 57,689 births in 2021, up from 50,398 in 2020 — an increase of 7,291 births or 14.5%. This surge indicates heightened public awareness and institutional efficiency in recording births. The completeness of birth registration in Tripura reached 100%, a significant milestone especially when compared with the national average of 92.0%.

Out of the total registered births: 30,591 were male births; and 27,098 were female births.

This results in a sex ratio at birth of 885 females per 1,000 males, which is lower than the national average of 907, reflecting persistent gender imbalances at birth that require sustained policy intervention and community outreach.

The birth rate in Tripura for the year was 13.4 per 1,000 population, showing a slight decline from the 14.0 recorded in 2020. While this marginal decrease indicates gradual demographic transition, the increasing number of registered births suggests improved civil registration coverage rather than a population surge.

In terms of mortality, 20,118 deaths were registered in Tripura in 2021, up from 17,198 deaths in 2020, showing an increase of 2,920 deaths, or 17%. The completeness of death registration in the state was 96.1%, which, though slightly below the national average of 98.2%, still marks significant progress in comparison to previous years.

Among the registered deaths: 12,636 were male deaths; and 7,482 were female deaths.

This leads to a sex ratio in registered deaths of 592 females per 1,000 males, highlighting disparities in mortality registration or possible differences in healthcare access and life expectancy between genders. The death rate for Tripura was 4.7 per 1,000 population, compared to 4.3 in 2020.

The rise in death registrations is partly attributed to improved awareness and record-keeping amid the COVID-19 pandemic, during which both the public and authorities became more vigilant about reporting vital events for health surveillance and eligibility for government relief schemes.

A large share of the birth and death registrations were facilitated through institutional mechanisms — particularly health centers, panchayats, and municipal offices. Urban areas showed slightly better registration timeliness, but rural outreach has improved markedly due to targeted awareness drives and digital access points.

Officials from the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Government of Tripura, credited this improvement to “persistent training of local registrars, digitization of registration units, and interdepartmental coordination between health, municipal, and rural development bodies.”

The data from CRS 2021 positions Tripura as a state with robust civil registration systems, achieving full birth registration coverage and high death registration accuracy. However, challenges remain in addressing the gender gap in both birth and death records, which reflect deeper socio-cultural and healthcare access issues.

A senior official in the Health and Family Welfare Department stated, “Tripura’s achievement in vital statistics registration is the result of a strong grassroots-level registration framework. Our next target is to eliminate gender gaps and ensure real-time digitization across all districts.”

Tripura’s performance sets an encouraging example for other northeastern states and underlines the importance of accurate civil registration as a foundation for evidence-based governance and equitable development.
