Dhekiajuli, Aug 7: Major Dwipannita Kalita, the first woman paratrooper from Assam, has been featured on the cover of Femina magazine in a special edition honouring 78 years of India’s independence. The feature showcases ten women from the Indian Army who are breaking barriers and redefining roles within the armed forces.
Hailing from a modest background in Dhekiajuli, a small town in Sonitpur district, Major Kalita’s journey is one of resilience and determination. She became the first girl from her district to study abroad, completing her MBBS in the Philippines. Before joining the Army, she gained clinical experience in emergency and obstetrics-gynecology departments at a hospital in Delhi.
Notably, Major Kalita joined the armed forces as a married woman in her 30s—defying traditional norms and proving that dedication knows no age or marital status. She now serves in the elite Parachute Medical Regiment of the Army Medical Corps.
Femina’s special edition celebrates women like Major Kalita who continue to inspire through their courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to national service. She appears on the cover alongside Colonel Sofia Qureshi and eight other officers under the theme In the Line of Duty.
Beyond her military responsibilities, Major Kalita finds balance through fitness, jazz music, gardening, and spending time with her pet dogs.
Her story continues to serve as a powerful inspiration for women across India and is a proud moment for the people of Assam.
