Guwahati, May 15: More than 23,000 people have been affected by urban floods in Assam as heavy rains lashed several parts of the state, officials said on Friday. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in its latest bulletin, reported flooding in Kamrup (Metropolitan), Sribhumi, and Cachar districts.

According to the bulletin, four revenue circles and 12 villages have been inundated, impacting 23,619 residents. Cachar district has been the worst-hit, with 15,617 people affected, followed by Sribhumi with 8,002. No deaths or missing persons have been reported in the past 24 hours.
Rescue operations were carried out in Sribhumi, where 53 marooned people and three animals were evacuated by a State Disaster Relief Force boat.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Sribhumi, Hailakandi, Cachar, and Dima Hasao districts for the next 24 hours, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. A ‘yellow alert’ has also been sounded for 20 districts, including Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, where heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to continue over the coming days.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and prepared as the state braces for more showers.
