The Gauhati High Court has directed families residing in the Doyang and Nambor reserve forests of Golaghat district to vacate the land within seven days, with Sunday set as the deadline. The state government has been authorized to carry out forced eviction if the order is not complied with.
The order was issued on Monday by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury. The court also instructed the government to establish an effective system to prevent future encroachment in forest areas.
The ruling came on petitions filed by 74 individuals challenging eviction notices from the district administration. The petitioners contended that the notices violated the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, the Assam Land Policy, 2019, and a Supreme Court order dated December 13, 2024.
