Agartala, October 14, 2025: Upholding the values of respect and responsibility towards parents, Social Education and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy on Tuesday said that taking care of elderly parents is an integral part of India’s tradition and culture, which every child must preserve and practice.

Addressing a state-level function organized at Agartala Town Hall to mark International Day for Older Persons, Minister Roy emphasized that sons, daughters, and relatives have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure the well-being of senior citizens. “If children are unable to take care of or maintain their aged parents, there are legal provisions available — with a tribunal functioning in every subdivision,” he stated.

The event, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, also witnessed the felicitation of four senior citizens for their remarkable contributions to society. Among the awardees was 106-year-old Aruna Prabha Majumdar of Dukli in West Tripura district, along with Pramod Lal Ghosh, Sukhini Debbarma, and Shanti Ranjan Majumdar. Each received a shawl, plaque, certificate and Rs 5,000 in cash from the Minister as a token of honor.

In recognition of efforts to spread awareness about senior citizens’ rights during Durga Puja, three clubs from West Tripura were also felicitated — Mukti Sangha (Ramnagar) secured the first prize, followed by Apanjan Sangha (Ranirbazar) and Chaumuhani Sangha (Satdubiya, Mohanpur). Additionally, three voluntary organizations Barajlar Abhiyan, Abhay Mission, and Voluntary Health Association of Tripura were awarded for their dedicated service to the elderly.

A health camp organized outside the Town Hall benefited 241 senior citizens, who underwent health and eye check-ups and received free medicines.

Among others present were Agartala Municipal Corporation’s Mayor Dipak Majumdar, Paschim Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, Social Welfare Secretary Tapas Roy, Director Tapan Kumar Das and Deputy Law Secretary Shankha Shubhra Dutta, who spoke about government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and legal measures ensuring dignity and protection for senior citizens.
