Agartala, November 01, 2025: Tripura’s law and order situation is under renewed scrutiny following a violent assault on two security personnel in Kumarghat, Unakoti district. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, has sparked widespread concern and political outrage across the state, with many questioning the effectiveness of the current administration in maintaining public safety.
Police sources informed that around 2 AM on Friday, TSR jawan Dipak Reang and SPO Ujjwal Debnath were attacked near the PWD Dak Bungalow in Halai Mura, Kumarghat, by three youths allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The assailants, reportedly riding a motorcycle at high speed, hurled verbal abuse at the patrolling officers. When confronted, they allegedly launched a frenzied assault, leaving both officers severely injured. SPO Debnath sustained a head injury, bleeding profusely on the road.
TSR jawan Reang managed to alert Kumarghat police station, prompting OC Sanjay Das to rush to the scene with reinforcements. The injured personnel were first taken to Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Hospital and later shifted to Unakoti District Hospital due to the severity of their condition.
Following an overnight manhunt, police arrested the three accused Parashar Deb, Rajdeep Deb and Kunal Shil. Their motorcycle, bearing registration number AR 01 G 6778, was also seized. A suo motu case was registered, and the trio was produced in court on Saturday, where the magistrate ordered judicial custody.
The attack has triggered intense public and political reaction, especially in light of a recent incident in Belonia where seven individuals accused of assaulting a police officer were released on bail within hours. Locals fear a pattern of impunity is emerging, with politically connected individuals allegedly flouting the law.
“This is not just a criminal act, it’s a direct challenge to the rule of law. If such attacks go unpunished, the public will lose faith in the system,” said a retired police officer who wished to remain anonymous.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the accused have close ties to a sitting MLA, raising concerns about political interference in the judicial process. Sources indicate that efforts are already underway to secure their release from custody, potentially igniting further unrest.
Observers note a disturbing trend: from Belonia to Kumarghat, individuals allegedly affiliated with nationalist groups are increasingly emboldened, challenging the authority of law enforcement. The public now demands not just administrative action, but political will to ensure that no one regardless of affiliation stands above the law.
