The United Christian Forum (UCF) has backed the Arunachal Christian Forum’s (ACF) planned mass vehicle rally in Itanagar on June 18, urging Christians nationwide to join the protest against the draft rules of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), 1978.
In a statement issued from New Delhi on Monday, the UCF said implementing the proposed APFRA draft rules could undermine religious freedom and personal autonomy.
The forum noted that although the Constitution allows reasonable restrictions for public order, such restrictions must be precise, necessary, and proportionate.
The UCF expressed apprehension that the draft rules may extend beyond curbing coercive conversions and could affect voluntary expressions of faith. “Matters of religion and belief are deeply personal and should not face excessive state scrutiny,” it said.
Citing Article 25, the UCF underlined that every citizen has the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion. It warned that the rules risk creating mistrust and curtailing freedom of conscience.
UCF National President Dr. Michael Williams said the demand to repeal APFRA seeks to restore balance between state law and constitutional freedoms.
“Repealing APFRA is not about removing protection. It is about ensuring laws do not overreach into personal freedoms. It is about aligning state legislation with constitutional values. It is about building a society where trust replaces suspicion,” Williams stated.
ACF leaders stated that the June 18 vehicle rally aims to show public opposition to the draft rules and mobilise wider support across Arunachal Pradesh.
