Dibrugarh, Feb 12: An Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet successfully carried out a trial landing today on the newly developed Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) along the Moran bypass highway in Dibrugarh district.
The 4.2-km facility, the first of its kind in Northeast India, is designed to serve as an alternative runway for fighter jets, transport aircraft such as Rafales, Sukhois, Hercules, cargo planes, and helicopters during emergencies, wars, or humanitarian operations in remote areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate and dedicate the facility to the nation on February 14. The event will be attended by the Defence Minister, Assam Governor, Chief Minister, and senior civil-military officials.
Prior to the trial landing, all technical and safety protocols were thoroughly checked under tight security by IAF and police personnel. While the public was kept at a distance, locals and visitors gathered nearby to witness the historic landing, marking the highway’s dual role as both a road and a runway.
