Manipur: Special Cataract Surgery Camp Brings New Hope To Elderly In Pherzawl

In a significant initiative to strengthen elderly healthcare services, the District Administration of Pherzawl organised a Special Cataract Detection and Surgery Camp for senior citizens at the District Hospital, Churachandpur, under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY).

The programme was spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the District Health Society, Pherzawl, the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), Churachandpur, and the Medical Superintendent of District Hospital, Churachandpur. The surgical camp commenced today and will continue on February 20 and 21.

Prior to the surgeries, extensive screening camps were conducted in Senvon, Parbung and Pherzawl from January 22 to 24 to identify elderly persons suffering from cataract and other age-related vision problems. A total of 37 senior citizens were found eligible for free surgical intervention, out of which 30 consented to undergo the procedure.
All beneficiaries areas being provided free surgery, medicines, incentives, post-operative care and intraocular lenses. In addition, six elderly patients were given free spectacles. Comprehensive pre-surgical tests, including HIV, Hepatitis B and C, RCB and blood grouping, were carried out to ensure patient safety. Officials informed that necessary transport and logistical arrangements have been made to facilitate access for patients coming from remote and underserved areas.

Deputy Commissioner Mannuamching, Additional Deputy Commissioner and in-charge District Social Welfare Officer Shri Joel G. Haokip, along with Dr. H. Ginthianmung, Nodal Officer of NPCB&VI, attended the inaugural session and interacted with the beneficiaries.

Several elderly patients expressed gratitude to the district administration, stating that the initiative has restored not only their vision but also renewed their confidence. The special drive reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive healthcare and the welfare of senior citizens in the district.
