Agartala, May 13, 2026: The District and Sessions Judge of Ambassa in Dhalai district on Monday convicted one person in a major narcotics case and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the NDPS Act.
The convict, identified as Supankar Debnath (35) of Dhanpur under Sonamura police station in Sepahijala district, was also fined Rs. 1 lakh. In default of payment, he will have to undergo an additional one-year rigorous imprisonment.
According to a press release issued by Tripura Police, the case dates back to August 10, 2024, when Ambassa police intercepted a Bolero vehicle near Chamalcherra following secret information about narcotics trafficking. During the chase, the driver met with an accident while attempting to flee. Police detained Supankar Debnath, while two others managed to escape.
A search conducted in presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses led to the recovery of 587.52 grams of brown sugar concealed in 49 soap cases and 80,000 Yaba tablets from a secret chamber inside the vehicle.
The chargesheet in the case was submitted by Sub-Inspector Joy Thapa of Ambassa police station on December 31, 2024. The court found the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence accordingly.
