Shillong, Feb 24: The Conrad K. Sangma-led Meghalaya government has ordered an inquiry into the availability of a doctor at Mawiong Primary Health Centre after Ricky AJ Syngkon collapsed during a futsal game last week and was initially taken to the facility for treatment.

Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Sangma said the state health department has initiated a probe to ascertain whether medical personnel were present at the primary health centre when the MP was brought in. He added that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

Syngkon, the Shillong Member of Parliament and founding general secretary of the Voice of the People Party, reportedly slumped while playing futsal. He was first rushed to Mawiong PHC and later shifted to a private hospital in Shillong, where he was declared dead on February 19.

The alleged absence of medical staff at the PHC has triggered public concern, with residents and civil society organisations calling for accountability and improved staffing at primary health centres across Meghalaya.
