Agartala, March 18, 2026: Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday raised serious concerns over the growing prevalence of private security agencies in the state, alleging exploitation of guards recruited from economically weaker sections.

Speaking during the zero-hour discussion in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Chaudhury said that hiring of private security personnel has “become a fashion” across government offices as well as private establishments, including hospitals and banks. He pointed out that many youths—both men and women—from poor and marginalized families are entering this sector in search of livelihood but are left vulnerable due to the absence of proper regulations.

“The recruited personnel are not provided with appointment letters, and their salary structures are kept completely opaque. Their employment remains uncertain, as they can be hired or dismissed at the discretion of the authorities,” he said, adding that such conditions have put their lives in a precarious situation.

Referring to the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005, Chaudhury noted that while the Act empowers state governments to frame rules and regulate the functioning of private security agencies, Tripura is yet to formulate the necessary guidelines. “In the absence of rules, there is no inspection mechanism. Workers are unaware of their duty hours, minimum wages, or any benefits, leading to large-scale exploitation,” he asserted.

Urging immediate intervention, the Opposition leader appealed to the Leader of the House and Chief Minister Manik Saha to examine the issue and extend support to affected workers. “These people need relief—at least some oxygen—to survive under such harsh conditions,” he added.

Chaudhury also raised the issue of pending recruitment under the Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT), stating that many candidates who appeared for various examinations are still awaiting appointments. He said complications arising from maintaining a 100 percent roster led to legal challenges, and despite a court verdict, the matter remains unresolved.

Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Manik Saha assured the House that the government would collect all relevant details on both issues and present them in the Assembly.
