Agartala, April 2, 2026: Intense tension has gripped Tripura’s Doluchhara locality and surrounding areas in Kailashahar, the subdivisional headquarters of Unakoti district after a horrific incident involving the alleged sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl.
Locals reported that the minor girl (referred to here as ‘Rimpi’ to protect her identity) was alone at home this morning while her parents, both daily-wage labourers, were at work. A youth from the nearby Bhagabannagar area identified as ‘Zafran Hussain’ (pseudonym), allegedly abducted her and dragged her into a nearby forest, where he attempted to commit a brutal sexual assault.
The child’s screams alerted nearby villagers, who rushed to the spot, caught the accused in the act, and detained him. An agitated crowd then handed him over to the police.
Police reached the scene, arrested the accused, rescued the child, and shifted her to the police station. She underwent a medical examination, and necessary legal formalities were completed before the case was produced in court.
However, the handling of the complaint has drawn sharp criticism. The child’s mother reportedly faced initial reluctance from police to register a formal written complaint, with officers suggesting they would instead file a suo motu case. This led to protests by the family and local residents. Allegations have also emerged that influential sections may be attempting to influence the case in favour of the accused, though these claims remain unverified officially.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Kailashahar subdivision. Residents are demanding swift justice, a thorough and impartial investigation, and the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrator under relevant laws for crimes against children.
This barbaric attack on a nine-year-old has shaken the conscience of the entire community, raising serious concerns about the safety of children and the moral fabric of society. Local voices are united in calling for exemplary action to ensure such heinous crimes do not recur.
