Agartala, April 14, 2026: The Left Front has alleged that the State Election Commission failed to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), raising serious concerns over the conduct of the recently concluded polls.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Left Front Convener Manik Dey expressed deep dissatisfaction, claiming that an atmosphere of unrest prevailed in several parts of the state from the pre-election period itself.
He alleged that clashes between the Tipra Motha and the Bharatiya Janata Party were reported from multiple locations, including on the eve of polling, creating fear among voters. “In many cases, people could not cast their votes freely due to intimidation,” he claimed.
Dey further stated that numerous violations of the Model Code of Conduct were reported across the state, but the Election Commission allegedly failed to take strict action, allowing the situation to deteriorate.
Raising questions over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), he said that despite sufficient availability of machines within the state, the decision to procure additional units from Madhya Pradesh has triggered doubts. He also alleged a lack of transparency in this process.
The Left Front maintained that deployment of central paramilitary forces at every polling booth, along with regular patrolling in sensitive areas, was essential to ensure a fair election. It also claimed that proposals for webcasting and installation of scanner systems at polling stations were not implemented.
With the polling process now over, attention has shifted to the counting of votes. In this regard, the Left Front has submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission, addressed to Commissioner Manoj Kumar, demanding strict measures to ensure transparency and security during the counting process.
The memorandum outlines several demands, including deployment of central paramilitary forces in and around counting centres, round-the-clock CCTV surveillance, and adequate security arrangements for counting agents during their movement. It also calls for proper seating arrangements inside counting halls and sufficient time for agents to verify results displayed on EVM control units.
Additionally, the Left Front has urged authorities to retain central forces in the state for at least a month after the declaration of results to prevent any possible post-election violence or retaliatory attacks against opposition supporters.
