Manipur: Padma Shri Awardee Thouranisabi Devi Passes Away At 91

Padma Shri awardee Kshetrimayum Ongbi Thouranisabi Devi, a legendary exponent of Manipuri classical dance and a distinguished National Sankirtana singer, passed away on May 12 at the age of 91.

Widely regarded as one of Manipur’s most respected cultural icons, Thouranisabi Devi dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the state. Her immense contribution to Manipuri dance and traditional performing arts earned her national recognition and admiration across the country.

Born on November 6, 1934 at Singjamei Sapam Leikai, Thouranisabi Devi was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer and author who specialised in the Manipuri dance form. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to art and culture, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri in 2003, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award.

Her demise has been widely mourned as an irreparable loss to Manipur and the larger artistic fraternity. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, along with several MLAs and political leaders, expressed grief and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla described her as a towering figure in the world of Manipuri classical dance and culture, stating that her lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting Manipur’s artistic heritage would continue to inspire generations of artistes and cultural practitioners. He said Manipur had lost one of its finest cultural torchbearers.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said he was deeply saddened by the demise of the iconic artiste, noting that her contributions to the field of art and culture earned admiration and respect across the nation. He termed her passing an irreparable loss not only to Manipur but to the entire artistic fraternity, and conveyed heartfelt condolences to her family members, admirers and well-wishers.

Former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh also expressed sorrow over her demise, recalling her invaluable role in preserving and enriching Manipuri classical dance and Ras Leela traditions. He extended condolences to her family, students and admirers, praying for eternal peace for the departed soul.
