Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday declared that those responsible for attacking BJP candidates in West Bengal would be “taught a lesson” once the party forms government in the state.

Expressing confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects, Sarma predicted that the party would secure at least 100 seats in Assam and 200 in West Bengal. His remarks came shortly after polling concluded in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, which recorded a voter turnout of 91.91 percent, according to the Election Commission of India.

Several districts reported exceptionally high participation, with Dakshin Dinajpur leading at 94.85 percent, followed by Cooch Behar at 94.54 percent, Birbhum at 93.70 percent, Jalpaiguri at 93.23 percent, and Murshidabad at 92.93 percent. The figures underscored widespread voter engagement across constituencies, where polling was conducted under tight security arrangements.

Sarma also praised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for his role in overseeing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. “Bharat Ratna should be given to the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, as the nation will not forget his contributions to carrying out the SIR. SIR should be carried out in Assam also,” he said.

Polling for the remaining 142 constituencies in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29, with votes set to be counted on May 4.
