Agartala, May 02, 2026: Road connectivity between Assam and Tripura has been severely disrupted following heavy monsoon rains, with a crucial stretch of National Highway-8 (NH-8) at Lowarpowa deteriorating into a dangerous and nearly impassable condition.

The highway—considered the lifeline linking Tripura with the rest of the country—has reportedly turned into a “deathtrap,” as large vehicles continue to get stranded in deep slush and broken road surfaces. The situation has led to massive traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of vehicles stuck for hours and causing immense hardship to commuters.

Reportedly, a 16-wheeled truck became severely stuck on the highway at the Lowarpowa stretch on Friday afternoon, triggering long queues of vehicles on both sides. Over 200 vehicles were stranded as the situation worsened, with no immediate intervention from the concerned road construction agency.

The disruption has been further aggravated by ongoing work under the Bharatmala project on the NH-20 bypass between Lowarpowa and Hatikhira in Assam. Due to the closure of that section, heavy vehicles are being diverted through the narrow roads of the Lowarpowa market area. These alternative routes, not designed to bear such heavy traffic, have rapidly deteriorated under pressure.

Local residents and drivers have expressed strong resentment, alleging negligence and lack of accountability on the part of the construction authorities. Despite prior assurances of timely repairs, no visible steps have been taken to restore the damaged roads.

With connectivity virtually crippled and risks mounting for daily commuters, pressing concerns remain over how stranded vehicles will be cleared and when normal traffic movement will resume. Residents and transporters are now urging immediate intervention to prevent further disruption and ensure road safety.
