Agartala, May 05, 2026: A tense situation prevailed in the Jampuijala–Takarjala belt on Tuesday following a 12-hour shutdown called by supporters of Tipra Motha. Since early morning, party activists and supporters staged protests at multiple locations, blocking key roads and burning tyres, leading to widespread disruption of normal life.

The shutdown was reportedly called to demand the release of Ranjit Debbarma, a Tipra Motha activist who was arrested in connection with an alleged act of vandalism at a local office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jampuijala. Protesters have alleged that the arrest was politically motivated and have demanded his immediate and unconditional release.

Demonstrators warned that failure to meet their demands could trigger a larger agitation in the coming days. The protests significantly affected vehicular movement across several routes in the Jampuijala and Takarjala areas, causing inconvenience to commuters and the general public.

In response to the situation, a heavy police presence has been deployed at sensitive locations to maintain law and order. Authorities are closely monitoring developments to prevent any escalation.

Meanwhile, the BJP has strongly condemned the attack on its party office, terming it an act of political violence. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and further action is expected based on the findings.

The situation remains tense but under control, officials said.
