Agartala, May 15, 2026: A sense of curiosity and concern gripped the Baligaon area near Kamalpur town after an old wartime shell was recovered from a stream on Thursday, rekindling memories of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War in this historic border region.

It is reported that, Madhu Deb, a resident of the locality, had gone fishing in a stream near Baligaon High School when he noticed a metallic object submerged beneath the water. Upon retrieving it, he realized that it resembled an old shell, triggering excitement and alarm among local residents.

Soon after the recovery, a large number of people gathered at the spot to catch a glimpse of the object. Local elders believe the shell may have landed in the area during military operations carried out along the Indo-Bangladesh border during the 1971 Liberation War. Kamalpur and adjoining regions had witnessed intense activity during that period due to their strategic location near the international border.

Although the shell has become heavily rusted after remaining underwater for decades, its shape and structure are still clearly visible. Many locals are viewing the recovered object as a relic connected to the historic events of 1971.

However, uncertainty remains over whether the shell is still live or inactive. Residents have reportedly informed the administration and urged authorities to examine the object to ensure public safety.
