Guwahati, May 15: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to implementing the promises made in the BJP’s 2026 election manifesto, stating that the responsibility of the administration has grown after the NDA’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters after offering prayers at Srimanta Sankardeva’s birthplace in Batadrava Than, Nagaon district, Sarma said the government would intensify its development efforts in the coming years. “Responsibility will increase after getting 102 seats. This time we will work harder compared to the last five years so that Assam can develop,” he remarked.

Sarma explained that the manifesto pledges were broader than those made in 2021, reflecting the changing circumstances after the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed confidence that the government would be able to deliver on commitments such as the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) excluding Sixth Schedule and Scheduled Tribe areas, creation of two lakh jobs, flood mitigation measures, expansion of educational institutions, and infrastructure development across the state.

The Chief Minister emphasized the spiritual significance of his visit to Batadrava Than, noting that it was his first programme outside Guwahati since taking oath on May 12. He said his government would follow the ideals of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, who envisioned an Assam where diverse communities live in harmony. Development of Batadrava Than, he added, would remain a priority, with discussions already held with the shrine’s management committee on upcoming projects.

Meanwhile, Sarma reviewed key initiatives under the “Vikas and Virasat” agenda, including 24×7 power supply, the Maa Kamakhya Corridor project, and investment proposals under Advantage Assam 2.0.

The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP secured 82 seats, while allies AGP and BOPF won 10 seats each. The new government was sworn in on May 12 in Guwahati in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior NDA leaders.
