Guwahati, May 18: Major Dr Dwipannita Kalita has etched her name in history as Assam’s first female paratrooper, breaking barriers in the Indian Army and inspiring countless women across the country. A distinguished medical officer, she has combined resilience, discipline, and courage to achieve what few dared to attempt.

Born in Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, Major Kalita rose from modest beginnings to pursue her MBBS in the Philippines, becoming the first girl from her district to study abroad. Before joining the Army, she gained clinical experience in Delhi, working in emergency and obstetrics-gynecology departments. Her entry into active service as a married woman in her thirties challenged long-standing stereotypes about age, gender, and marital status.

In 2023, at the age of 34, she volunteered for the rigorous paratrooper and airborne training at Agra. Successfully completing the demanding course, she earned the coveted Paratrooper Badge and the elite Maroon Beret, becoming the first woman from Assam to qualify as a paratrooper. She now serves in the Parachute Medical Regiment of the Army Medical Corps.

Her achievements have continued to gain recognition. In 2025, Major Kalita was featured on the cover of Femina magazine in a special edition marking 78 years of India’s independence. The edition highlighted ten women officers of the Indian Army who are redefining roles within the armed forces, including Colonel Sofia Qureshi and others, under the theme In the Line of Duty.

Beyond her military responsibilities, Major Kalita finds balance in fitness, jazz music, gardening, and caring for her pet dogs. Her journey stands as a proud moment for Assam and a powerful reminder that dedication and resilience can overcome barriers, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in service to the nation.
