Agartala, May 18, 2026: Tripura has entered a new phase in its transport evolution, achieving full electrification of its 271-kilometre railway corridor stretching from Churaibari in the north to Sabroom in the south. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has indicated that electric MEMU train services will soon be rolled out, ushering in faster, cleaner, and more economical rail travel across the state.

The electrification initiative, carried out by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), marks a significant upgrade to the state’s rail infrastructure. Dedicated traction substations have been made operational in Unakoti, Khowai, and Gomati districts to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply. Railway officials confirmed that multiple successful trial runs of electric locomotives have already validated the system’s readiness.

Sources within the railways suggest that MEMU services are likely to commence by June 2026, initially covering the Agartala–Dharmanagar and Agartala–Sabroom routes. Designed for short-distance travel, these trains are expected to greatly benefit daily passengers such as office commuters, students, and small traders by offering quicker acceleration, shorter journey times, and reduced travel costs. Additionally, the shift from diesel to electric traction is set to significantly cut down emissions.

Officials also noted that MEMU trains will enhance regional connectivity by accommodating more stoppages at smaller stations and semi-urban pockets, making rail travel more accessible to a broader population.

With final safety checks, signalling enhancements, and operational preparations currently in progress, authorities are optimistic about launching passenger services within weeks. This development positions Tripura among the leading northeastern states to achieve complete railway electrification.

For residents, the upcoming electric train services represent more than just improved mobility—they signal a decisive step toward sustainable, efficient, and future-ready transportation.
