The 16th Assam Legislative Assembly commenced its first session today, marking the beginning of four scheduled sittings on May 21, 22, 25, and 26. The proceedings opened with the announcement of the Pro-tem Speaker, as senior BJP legislator Chandra Mohan Patowary was appointed to the role by the Governor of Assam. Patowary administered the oath of office to the newly elected members of the Assembly, formally initiating the House’s activities.
Later in the day, the Assembly is set to elect a full-time Speaker to preside over its proceedings. In parallel, the State Cabinet has already approved the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during its first sitting. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed yesterday that the Bill will be introduced and passed during the ongoing session, underscoring the government’s commitment to implementing its manifesto promises.
The opening of the Assembly session signals a decisive start for the new government, combining ceremonial proceedings with significant legislative action.
