Agartala, May 22, 2026: Preparations for India’s 16th Census, scheduled for 2027, have officially begun in North Tripura district, with authorities gearing up to conduct the nationwide population count entirely through digital mode for the first time.
A press conference regarding the upcoming Census 2027 was held on Friday at the Video Conference Hall of the District Magistrate’s office in Dharmanagar. The meeting was attended by Chief Principal Census Officer Ratan Biswas, Additional District Magistrate Bijoy Sinha, and Administrative Officer Subhajit Deb Roy.

He stated that the new process is expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the nationwide exercise.
Biswas informed that around 1,000 personnel from North Tripura district will be directly engaged in the census operation. The workforce will include senior administrative officials, supervisors, and field-level workers.
To prepare the staff, a three-day training programme has been launched. The first phase of the training began on Friday with the ceremonial lighting of a lamp, while the remaining sessions will continue on Saturday and another scheduled date later.
He further announced that, for the first time, citizens will be allowed to upload their own data online through a dedicated government portal. Residents will be able to submit details of themselves and their family members by answering 33 questions in an online form.
The self-registration process will remain open from July 17 to July 31, 2026.
According to officials, the main census operation will be conducted in two phases. The first phase of field-level work will take place from August 1 to August 30, 2026, after completion of the online registration process. The second phase is scheduled for February 2027.
The administration also assured that all information collected during the census would remain strictly confidential under existing legal provisions.
Officials stated that awareness campaigns regarding the 33 census questions will be carried out through various media platforms before the commencement of the survey.
Appealing for public cooperation, the administration said the census plays a crucial role in national development planning and policy formulation, urging citizens across North Tripura to provide accurate information and support census workers to ensure a transparent and successful Digital Census 2027.
