Aizawl, June 15: Mizoram Governor VK Singh has urged citizens to uphold the Mizo value of Tlawmngaihna – the spirit of selflessness, compassion, and voluntary service while stressing the importance of collective action against drug abuse. His appeal came during the 91st raising day celebrations of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), one of the state’s most influential community organisations.

Singh commended the YMA for its longstanding role in assisting the needy, preserving Mizo culture and traditions, and supporting government welfare initiatives. He called on people to foster unity, respect elders, and remain connected to their cultural heritage, while expressing concern over the growing threat of drug and substance abuse. He emphasized that concerted efforts are needed to safeguard the future of the younger generation.

The YMA marked its anniversary with statewide functions, sports, and cultural events. Local branches carried out cleanliness drives, extended relief to orphanages and rehabilitation centres, and supported economically weaker sections. Central YMA president R Laingheta urged members to intensify the fight against drug trafficking, describing drug dealers as enemies of families and communities.

Founded in 1935 as the Young Lushai Association and renamed the Young Mizo Association in 1947, the organisation was initiated by Welsh Christian missionaries. Headquartered in Aizawl, it operates through a vast network of eight sub-headquarters, 50 groups, and 821 branches across Mizoram and parts of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Bangladesh.
