In a groundbreaking development for India’s fisheries sector, Manipur has become the first state to successfully achieve the induced breeding of Sareng (Wallago attu). The announcement was made by Heikham Dingo, Minister of Fisheries, Social Welfare, Skill, Labour, Employment, and Entrepreneurship, during the 2nd Imoinu Fish Festival at Hatta Kangjeibung.

The Minister credited the success to the collaborative efforts of local fish farmers and the Department of Fisheries, who integrated indigenous knowledge with modern scientific techniques. Expressing his gratitude, Heikham Dingo extended warm wishes to the people of Manipur on the occasion of the Imoinu Festival, a celebration of progress in the aquaculture sector.

Highlighting the state’s achievements, Minister Dingo emphasized that increased fish production has significantly reduced Manipur’s reliance on external fish supplies. “The efforts of the Fisheries Department and fish farmers have reduced our annual import expenses from ₹400 crore to ₹200 crore,” he stated. Plans are underway to further minimize fish imports into the state.

The 2nd Imoinu Fish Festival showcased the state’s fisheries potential, featuring 120 stalls, including those representing internally displaced persons. The event offered 80,000 kilograms of fish, with popular varieties like ‘Sareng’ and ‘Nung-nga’ taking center stage. This milestone not only advances aquaculture in Manipur but also sets an example for the rest of India.
