Agartala, June 10, 2026: Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday issued a stern warning against electricity theft and non-payment of power bills, asserting that no leniency would be shown to violators as the government moves to safeguard the interests of honest consumers.
Addressing the issue, the minister said electricity is an essential component of modern life and that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) is working relentlessly to ensure uninterrupted service to citizens. He emphasized that consumers who steal power or fail to clear dues ultimately burden law-abiding users.
“Why should honest consumers suffer for the actions of dishonest individuals?” Nath questioned, adding that a series of intensified drives would continue across the state against power theft and unpaid electricity bills.
According to TSECL data, a total of 72,432 electricity connections were disconnected over the last two financial years due to non-payment of bills. During 2024-25 alone, 50,418 connections were cut, while 28,229 were restored after dues were cleared. The enforcement drive peaked in January 2025, when 12,675 connections were disconnected. In 2025-26, another 22,014 connections were disconnected, with 16,803 later restored following payment.
The corporation has also intensified action against illegal hook-line connections. In 2024-25, officials disconnected 9,942 illegal connections and recovered ₹3.11 crore in penalties. The following fiscal year saw 10,948 hook lines removed, generating ₹3.48 crore in fines.
Power sector officials noted that electricity theft places excessive strain on transformers and distribution lines, increasing maintenance costs and affecting service quality. Under the leadership of TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, the corporation has strengthened revenue collection and anti-theft measures.
Nath reiterated that vigilance teams would further intensify enforcement drives while urging consumers to pay bills on time and use electricity responsibly to support the modernization of Tripura’s power infrastructure.
