The rare Chinese Rose Windmill butterfly (Papilio genestieri) has been recorded in India for the first time, with its presence confirmed in the Shi-Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. This distinctive Sino-Tibetan butterfly was observed during a recent high-altitude survey conducted in Mechukha.
The finding adds a valuable species to the biodiversity of the region. The discovery team includes Dr. Monsoon J. Gogoi, Yumlam Benjamin Bida from ATREE, Tajum Yomcha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) of Itanagar, and Duyir Buni Yedi of Mechukha Tourism.
This significant discovery is expected to bring added attention to the upcoming High Altitude Butterfly and Biodiversity Meet planned in Mechukha this July.
