A Delhi court on Monday granted regular bail to a married couple accused of allegedly using racial slurs against their neighbours from Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

Additional Sessions Judge Samar Vishal allowed the bail plea after the couple’s 30-day interim bail, granted on March 11, came to an end. The accused, Harsh Priya Singh and Ruby Jain, were represented by advocates Abinash Kumar, B.P. Singh, and Sumanta Barik.

During the hearing, the defence informed the court that the accused had complied with all earlier bail conditions, including vacating their residence in Malviya Nagar, where the incident reportedly took place on February 20, relocating to another address, and notifying the investigating officer of their new residence.

The defence also submitted medical records stating that Ruby Jain is undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. They further noted that the couple had issued a public apology on social media and expressed remorse to the victims in the presence of the landlord, adding that the case had adversely affected their reputation.

Opposing the bail plea, the prosecution argued that strong action was necessary to deter racial abuse. The prosecution counsel pointed out that one of the victims had returned to Manipur amid ethnic tensions, while others faced emotional distress, loss of opportunities, and financial difficulties due to a forced relocation following media attention. It was also argued that individuals in socially prominent positions should act responsibly and not engage in such behaviour.

The couple was arrested on February 25 under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of women, and promoting enmity between groups. The dispute reportedly arose after debris from an air conditioner installation allegedly fell onto the floor below.

A detailed court order is still awaited.
