Guwahati, May 27: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in Assam has arrested eight government officials, including two Assam Civil Service (ACS) officers, in connection with alleged financial irregularities linked to the Assam Fishery Development Corporation Ltd (AFDCL).
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, DVAC teams carried out search operations across Guwahati, Belsor in Nalbari, Gauripur in Dhubri, and Raha in Nagaon as part of a case registered in 2023. The investigation pertains to suspected misappropriation of government funds by officials associated with the AFDCL.
Among those arrested are ACS officers Anuradha Adhikary Sarma and Naren Chandra Basumatary, both former managing directors of the corporation. Basumatary is currently serving as joint secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department. The DVAC also apprehended two former executive engineers, Jyotish Saikia and Birinchi Adhikary, along with other employees of the corporation Jyoti Prasad Saikia (then assistant executive engineer), Saburuddin Ahmed (then assistant engineer), Bhogirath Das (then project manager), and Rabindra Narayan Deka (then assistant technical officer).
Officials confirmed that follow-up actions are underway to pursue the investigation further. The arrests come just days after another ACS officer, Lachit Kumar Das, was taken into custody on graft charges, with authorities recovering over ₹1.66 crore in cash and fixed deposits worth ₹86 lakh, highlighting a widening crackdown on corruption within the state bureaucracy.
