Guwahati, Feb 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged links between Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan has so far uncovered only “one per cent” of what he described as a larger global conspiracy against India. The Chief Minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a government function in Sivasagar.
Sarma said the investigation by the Assam Police is focused on what he termed a wider “system” rather than a single individual, and described the probe as “very sensitive.” According to him, the matter has implications beyond state politics and involves alleged international elements. He claimed that aspects of the alleged conspiracy were linked to activities originating from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
The SIT is examining allegations related to Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his reported connections with Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth Colburn. Sarma stated that the probe remains at an early stage as electronic evidence, data from Indian government agencies, and inputs through Interpol cooperation are still pending. He added that the limited material available so far represents only preliminary findings.
The Chief Minister said the Asaam cabinet will review the future course of the investigation on February 7. He also announced a press conference scheduled for 10:30 am on February 8, where parts of the SIT report are expected to be made public. Sarma said further investigation by central agencies may be required.
Earlier, Sarma had alleged that Gogoi and Colburn acted as “Pakistani agents,” claiming that Colburn had travelled multiple times between India and Pakistan and that Gogoi had visited Pakistan on an invitation from the ISI. He also stated that the SIT has questioned Colburn and between 22 and 25 other individuals as part of the inquiry.
Gaurav Gogoi has rejected the allegations, describing them as “ridiculous, baseless, insane, and nonsense.” He accused Sarma of making politically motivated statements and denied any wrongdoing.
Officials have not yet released the SIT’s detailed findings, and further developments are expected following the cabinet review and the scheduled press briefing.
