Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that significant progress has been achieved in the effort to establish the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati after a meeting with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the national capital. The discussions, held on Tuesday evening at the Union Minister’s official residence, focused on finalising the framework for the proposed campus, which is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening higher education infrastructure in the state.
Sarma, in a post on X, said Assam is working to position itself as East India’s next education hub by attracting premier institutions. He expressed gratitude to Pradhan for his continued support, noting that the proposed IIM Guwahati would boost management education, research, and skill development while enhancing Assam’s reputation as an emerging centre for learning. The initiative is part of the state government’s broader vision to transform Assam into a leading educational destination in eastern India.
Further details regarding the location, infrastructure, and implementation timeline of the campus are expected to be announced after consultations between the state and central governments are completed.
Meanwhile, in another development on Tuesday, Sarma joined Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M Scindia to launch Mission “Senehjori Assam Muga Silk USP.” The initiative, anchored by MDONER in collaboration with the Government of Assam, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, and other organisations, aims to transform Assam’s unique Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile ecosystem. The mission seeks to strengthen the entire value chain, from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to weaving, branding, export promotion, digital traceability, and tourism, thereby positioning Muga silk as a high-value product in international markets.
