The first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly is set to begin on May 21, marking the formal commencement of legislative proceedings after the recently concluded assembly elections. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya issued the order summoning the Assembly to meet at 9:30 a.m. in the chamber at Dispur, exercising powers under Article 174 of the Constitution of India.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who took oath on May 12, has already moved into action with a series of intensive reviews across departments. On Friday, he held a six-hour meeting with officials to accelerate governance and development under the vision of “Viksit Assam.” The discussions focused on Food & Public Distribution, Finance, and the Public Works Department.

Sarma emphasized farmer welfare by directing officials to make paddy procurement more farmer-friendly and ensure that cultivators are fairly compensated. He also reviewed the state’s fiscal health ahead of the full budget, stressing the importance of aligning financial planning with promises made to the electorate.

On infrastructure, the Chief Minister urged officials to expedite flagship projects such as Asom Mala and other connectivity schemes, with particular attention to quality in road and bridge construction. He reiterated that the NDA 3.0 government must work at full pace to deliver on its commitments.

Earlier, Sarma had reviewed progress on initiatives tied to the “Vikas and Virasat” agenda, including uninterrupted power supply, the Maa Kamakhya Corridor project, and investment opportunities under Advantage Assam 2.0. The Cabinet, in its first meeting on May 13, resolved to implement all 31 manifesto promises in “letter and spirit” over the next five years.

The upcoming Assembly session will provide the first platform for the new government to outline its legislative priorities and reinforce its development agenda.
