A court in Tezpur, Assam’s Sonitpur district, on Monday delivered two separate verdicts in cases of murder and assault. District and sessions judge Kaushik Hazarika sentenced Milon Karmakar to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 for the murder of his father-in-law, Bishnu Tanti. The incident occurred on April 16, 2025, under the jurisdiction of Dhekiajuli police station, where Karmakar fatally struck Tanti on the head with a brick.
In another case, the same court sentenced Jiten Kumar to four years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting his sister-in-law. The assault took place on April 11, 2025, and was registered at Rangapara police station. Kumar was convicted under Section 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to disrobe or compel her to be naked.
Prosecution advocate Prayag Kumar Sarma confirmed both judgments, marking significant rulings in cases of violent crime within the district.
