Guwahati, May 27: BJP president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday hailed the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by the Assam Assembly as a “historic” development, saying the state had strongly demonstrated its commitment to social harmony and equal justice.
“The policy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has always been clear: justice for all and appeasement of none,” Nabin wrote in a post on X. He described the passage of the Bill as a significant step toward equal rights and a uniform civil system across the country.
Congratulating the Assam government, Nabin credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership for what he termed a “historic decision.” He noted that Assam had followed in the footsteps of Uttarakhand and Gujarat, becoming the third state to pass a UCC Bill.
“Such visionary decisions are continuously strengthening the resolve of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’,” Nabin added.
The Assam Assembly passed the UCC Bill on Wednesday, seeking to establish a common legal framework governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships irrespective of religion. The opposition, however, demanded that the legislation be referred to a select committee for further scrutiny.
