Guwahati, June 3: Priyada Gogoi, mother of Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, died on Wednesday morning in Guwahati after a prolonged illness. She was 96.

Family members said she had been receiving treatment for age-related ailments and passed away at about 6:20 am. Her body will be taken to Selenghat near Mariani in Jorhat district for final rites, to be attended by relatives and close associates.

Akhil Gogoi, who was at her side when she died, described the loss as a deeply personal tragedy. Political leaders, supporters and well-wishers across Assam have extended condolences.

Priyada Gogoi was noted for her active support of her son’s political career. During the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, while Akhil Gogoi contested the Sivasagar seat as an independent from detention over anti-CAA protests, she campaigned door to door and appealed publicly for his release efforts credited with helping mobilise support that contributed to his victory.
