Agartala, April 25, 2026: In a disturbing incident, the ceiling of a newly renovated Anganwadi centre at Uttar Belonia in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision collapsed barely two weeks after the completion of renovation work. No injuries were reported as the centre remained closed on the occasion of the Garia Puja holiday.
According to local sources, the ceiling gave way अचानक during the day. With no children or staff present at the time, a potentially serious mishap was averted. However, the incident has triggered alarm among residents over the structural safety of the facility.
Sources said the renovation work, undertaken under a rural development scheme, had been completed around 13 days ago after nearly a month of construction. The project was reportedly overseen by Junior Engineer Binoy Banik of Bharatchandranagar Block. Locals have alleged use of substandard materials and negligence in execution.
The situation turned tense when media persons arrived at the site. Two members of the Sukanta Nagar Gram Panchayat—identified as Srikanta Sen and Ashish Pathari—reportedly got into an altercation with journalists and allegedly attempted to prevent coverage of the incident. Claims of intimidation during the exchange have also surfaced.
Residents further alleged that complaints regarding poor-quality construction and irregularities in development works have been raised earlier, but no effective action was taken, leading to repeated occurrences.
The incident has sparked resentment in the area, with locals demanding accountability and strict action against those responsible. They have also urged authorities to ensure proper quality checks in all public infrastructure projects.
No official statement has been issued by the administration so far. However, sources indicated that an inquiry into the matter is likely to be initiated soon.
