Agartala, May 16, 2026: Tripura is poised to receive a new TSR unit after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved the creation of an Indian Reserve (IR) Battalion in the state. The approval was communicated to the Tripura Chief Secretary through an official letter issued on May 15.

As per the communication, the President of India has sanctioned the raising of one Indian Reserve Battalion for Tripura. To support the initiative, the Centre will extend a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50 crore for setting up the battalion. Additionally, Rs 30 crore will be provided for infrastructure development and land acquisition.

The state government has been instructed to establish the battalion in compliance with all norms and guidelines applicable to armed police forces. However, the recurring annual expenditure and the remaining infrastructure costs will have to be managed by the state government.

While the primary objective behind raising the battalion is to enhance Tripura’s internal security framework, being an Indian Reserve Battalion, the force may also be deployed anywhere in the country by the Government of India whenever required.

Tripura currently has TSR battalions up to the 15th battalion level. Of these, 13 battalions are presently operational, as two units had been disbanded earlier. One among the existing battalions is an all-women unit. With the establishment of the new IR Battalion, it will effectively be regarded as the 16th battalion in the state.

The Centre’s approval is expected to significantly reinforce Tripura’s security infrastructure and preparedness.
