Meghalaya, Apr 14: Former MLA Estamur Momin surrendered before police at Nongpoh Police Station in Ri Bhoi district on Monday in connection with recent violence in West Garo Hills linked to GHADC election tensions.

The incident dates back to March 9, when Momin was filing his nomination at the Tura Deputy Commissioner’s office. According to officials, protests broke out during the process and later escalated into clashes. Authorities have also alleged that Momin delivered an inflammatory speech in Chibinang on the same day, which contributed to unrest in parts of Garo Hills.

Following the violence and deterioration in the law and order situation, the state government suspended the GHADC elections.

Police said Momin had been absconding since the incidents earlier this month. His surrender has now been confirmed, while details regarding specific charges and further legal action are awaited.
