Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday called upon the people to uphold values such as integrity in public life, communal harmony, respect for the rule of law and commitment to the welfare of all citizens as true tributes to the martyrs.
Speaking at the annual Khongjom Day celebrations held at the Khongjom War Memorial, the Governor said the occasion remains a significant and emotional moment in the history of Manipur.
Observed every year on April 23, Khongjom Day commemorates the valour and sacrifice of Manipuri heroes who fought in the Anglo-Manipur War.
Earlier in the day, the Governor along with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led dignitaries in laying floral wreaths at the memorial. Tributes were also paid at the statue of Paona Brajabashi, followed by a ceremonial gun salute in his honour.
Addressing the gathering, Bhalla said Khongjom Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a moment for reflection, underscoring the need for unity, self-respect and resilience in the face of challenges.
He emphasised that true patriotism lies in building an inclusive and progressive society, empowering the youth, and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state. The Governor further urged the people to work collectively towards peace, development and a stronger Manipur.
