The Lok Sabha was adjourned multiple times on Wednesday as tensions escalated between the ruling BJP and opposition members over several issues, including the ongoing violence in Manipur, allegations linking Congress leaders to billionaire George Soros, and personal remarks directed at Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
The trouble began when Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised the issue of the violence in Manipur, accusing the BJP of using the Soros controversy to divert attention from its failures in handling the situation in the northeastern state. In response, BJP Minister Piyush Goyal hit back, alleging Congress had links to Soros-backed organizations that were attempting to destabilize India. This led to the first adjournment of the session by BJP MP Sandhya Ray, who was presiding over the House.
When the House reconvened, the Railway (Amendment) Bill, which had been pending for several days, was debated and passed. However, fresh tensions arose during a discussion on amendments to the Disaster Management Act. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee accused the central government of non-cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic, while Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai defended the government, praising Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and accusing the West Bengal government of obstructing vaccine distribution.
The situation took a further turn when Banerjee made personal remarks about Scindia, leading to an uproar in the House. Speaker Om Birla expunged the comments, but the tensions continued. Banerjee later apologized, but Scindia rejected the apology, stating that personal attacks were unacceptable. The disagreement led to another adjournment.
When the session resumed, protests from the treasury benches continued, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for the day.
