The Forest Department, Government of Manipur, observed the International Day of Forests at Lamdeng Makha Leikai in Imphal West, with active participation from officials, civil society organisations, Meira Peibis, students, JFMC members and local residents.
The event was graced by Anurag Bajpai, PCCF & HoFF and ACS (TCI & Transport), as Chief Guest, along with Guests of Honour including Soreiphy Vashum, L. Joykumar Singh and Gaithaolu Thaimei.
Addressing the gathering, Bajpai reiterated the department’s commitment to forest conservation, highlighting that over 74% of Manipur’s geographical area is under forest cover. He stressed that forests you are vital for livelihoods, food security and the state’s economy, and will play a key role in meeting future needs.
A major highlight of the programme was the launch of the “Ningol Van Initiative,” aimed at strengthening community participation, particularly encouraging women’s role in protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable practices. He announced that similar initiatives will be expanded across all districts.
The PCCF & HoFF also noted that 11 micro food-processing units have been established under Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, with 95% operated by women, and assured that more such centres will be set up to enhance livelihood opportunities.
Expressing concern over challenges such as forest fires, illegal excavation and poppy cultivation, he called for collective efforts and warned of strict action against such activities.
He informed that 970 hectares of illegal poppy cultivation have been destroyed this year, with plans to utilise the cleared land for bamboo and essential oil plantations.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to individuals for their contributions to forest conservation and wildlife protection. The programme concluded with a tree plantation drive, reaffirming the commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
