Manipur University has kept in abeyance its earlier directive mandating the use of Hindi in official noting and drafting.

According to Office Order issued on Tuesday by Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, the decision was taken due to “procedural lapses.” The earlier order, dated August 29, 2025, had instructed the adoption of Hindi in official communications within the university.

The latest notification clarifies that the directive will not be enforced until further review and approval by the competent authority.

The move comes amid ongoing debates in the Northeast over language policy and the imposition of Hindi in administrative and educational institutions. The university’s clarification signals a pause in enforcement, leaving the issue open for reconsideration.
