Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday laid the foundation for urban development projects worth over ₹150 crore in Tura.
The projects include the redevelopment of Najing Bazar into a commercial hub with upgraded market spaces, parking facilities, hotel infrastructure, and dedicated vendor areas. A ₹51.21 crore Multi-Level Car Parking and Cinema Complex is planned at Dakopgre, featuring parking capacity for 200 vehicles, three cinema screens, a gaming zone, and a food court.
The SMELC Complex will also be refurbished to include an Art and Culture Promenade, museum, children’s zone park, Chief Minister’s Youth Centre, and Active Ageing Centre.
During the event, the Tura Municipal Board Mobile App was launched, sanctions were distributed to local artists under the CM Artists Engagement Scheme, and initiatives such as locality-wise waste management grading were announced. Urban safety measures, including LED street lighting and CCTV installations across Tura, were also highlighted.
Officials stated that these developments are aimed at improving urban infrastructure in Tura ahead of the 39th National Games 2027, with a focus on tourism, sports, culture, and economic activities.
