Shillong, May 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has voiced strong concern over the alleged assault of a woman from the Northeast in Delhi, urging authorities to ensure stringent legal action against those responsible.
In a statement posted on X, Sangma condemned the incident, which involved two women one from Assam and another from Bihar who were reportedly molested and assaulted by a group of men outside a hotel in Nehru Place, southeast Delhi, on May 10. Delhi Police confirmed that four suspects have been detained in connection with the case.
The assault occurred around 6:30 a.m. near a tea stall outside the hotel. Sangma described the attack as both physical and racially motivated, stressing that repeated acts of violence and discrimination against people from the Northeast cannot be treated as isolated incidents.
“Such repeated acts of violence and discrimination cannot be dismissed as isolated incidents and must be met with the strictest punishment under the law,” he said.
The Chief Minister further urged authorities to act swiftly to safeguard the dignity and security of Northeast residents living across the country. “Racial discrimination and violence against people from the Northeast have no place in our society and must be dealt with firmly,” he added.
