Shillong, June 10: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has hailed the release of 14 Kuki civilians in Manipur’s Senapati district, describing the act as a humanitarian gesture that embodies compassion and reconciliation. Sangma, who also serves as the National President of the National People’s Party (NPP), expressed gratitude to the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga tribal Hohos, civil society organisations, and community leaders for facilitating the release.

In his statement, the Chief Minister said the decision reflects the finest traditions of the Naga people, whose customs and faith have long upheld dignity, reconciliation, and respect for human life. He noted that the gesture sends a powerful message of hope to Manipur and the wider Northeast at a time when communities continue to endure the scars of conflict.

Sangma urged Kuki civil society organisations and leaders to reciprocate by ensuring the immediate and unconditional release of six Naga civilians reportedly still in captivity. He commended the UNC and Naga organisations for demonstrating restraint, wisdom, and moral courage, adding that their actions prove peace and humanity can prevail even in difficult circumstances.

Reiterating the NPP’s commitment, Sangma affirmed that the party stands firmly for dialogue, reconciliation, and the protection of all citizens regardless of tribe, community, or faith. He called on all stakeholders to seize this moment to show that compassion is stronger than conflict and that humanity must remain the foundation for lasting peace in the region.
